About our Guild

We are a big, lively group of fibre crafters in this lovely rural area northeast of Wellington, New Zealand. Our membership includes spinners, weavers, knitters, crocheters and felters.

  • every Wednesday from 10am to about 2pm
  • the first and third Tuesdays of each month from 7pm
  • the first Saturday in each month from 10.30am to 1.30pm
    There are no meetings in January.

 We love welcoming interested visitors to our meetings! Friendly helpful people share and encourage your interests in a range of fibre crafts including spinning, weaving, knitting, crochet, and felting.

Where we meetShopinwoolshed
Our meetings are held in The Wool Shed, New Zealand’s National Museum of Sheep and Shearing, at 12 Dixon St Masterton. We have a share of the shop in the foyer, where our members can sell their creations of wonderful New Zealand wool — and visiting spinners might like to know that we also sell top quality fleeces and carded wool.

The Wool Shed is a great place to visit while you’re in the Wairarapa!

Wairarapa Spinners and Weavers Guild Subscription entitles you to:
Our monthly newsletter which contains details of craft events around the Area
Participate in education sessions.
Hire a variety of equipment for a small cost.
Sell your work at The Wool Shed Shop and our annual pop-up shop (Terms and Conditions apply)
Visit other Guilds in the Wellington Area and join in bus trips outside of the Wairarapa.
Our Guild library is open at meetings, and members can borrow from it for a small charge. It contains an excellent collection of books on all aspects of our crafts, and we also subscribe to several spinning and weaving magazines.

    The Wool Shed is a fantastic venue. You are so lucky to meet amongst all that historical woolly paraphernalia. We meet at our local cricket club so there’s not the atmosphere that you’d experience. I loved the Wool Shed when I visited in April this year and I loved meeting all your lovely spinners, weavers, knitters and crocheters.

    I’d love to visit next time I’m back in NZ. Had friends and family in Masterton 20ish years ago. Currently belong to a spinning/weaving group in Murgon, Queensland. So we spin with hot damp hands for a couple of months of cool weather. It’s all good experience, and like most spinners, just wonderful women.

        Hello fellow spinners-weavers-knitter. I am all of the above and planning to visit New Zealand from Arizona, USA. I would love some ideas about visiting NZ. We don’t want to drive but want to see as much as possible. Does anyone have ideas for tours or such. Would love any feedback. Thanks Paula

    Perhaps someone else will have more ideas. It’s understandable not wanting to drive, and some of our roads are not the best by international standards.But it’s a bit tricky to know what to suggest. Be sure to look at the Resources page of http://www.creativefibre.org.nz/‎ and perhaps also the Products and Services page of http://www.colouredsheep.org.nz/. The Creative Fibre site also has a list of the various groups around the country, and they all welcome visitors if you happen to be in the vicinity when they are meeting. When will you be in NZ?

      Mary,
      Both Websites that you listed were very interesting and I will do some research. We are thinking of doing our trip in Dec 2017 or Dec-Jan 2017-18. We were hoping to travel around for 3 weeks. We have seen several tours for about 15 to 18 days and then we thought we would arrive early and stay a few days longer at the end and spend a few extra days in Aukland and Christchurch. Are there any other areas that you would recommend taking some extra time to explore–being that we won’t have a car? I assume we will be able to get around Aukland and Christchurch without a car? However I am hoping to go to the Ashford spinning factory and I was told that is a ways out of town and no public transportation–so we are going to have to figure that out. Any other thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated. If anyone ever travels to the USA we live in Arizona and love to show people around–there are lots of weaving done here.
